Art was my love from as early as I can remember. Daughter of a commercial artist father and an artistic mother, art came naturally to me. I drew my first portrait at age 8. At 12, I started drawing classmates’ portraits from their photos. I fell in love with drawing faces. Intrigued by the playfulness and speed of caricaturing, I taught myself that craft and began caricaturing at the Minnesota State Fair in 1975, continuing to this day. The caricatures I draw borrowed from my early portrait experience, and people express their delight with the results, saying they can really see themselves in my work.

I had attended art school in St. Paul, Minnesota, and became a commercial artist. I’ve been an illustrator, art director and graphic designer since 1975. I’ve created award winning packaging design and dimensional paper sculpture illustration, and was featured in a “How to” book on paper sculpture. I received a prestigious Gold Award for my dimensional illustration work from the 3Dimensional Art Directors and Illustrators Award Show in New York. My art has been featured in magazines, ads and editorials, and on the cover art of several books, including “The Eagle’s Secret”, “Stop Getting By and Start Getting Rich”, and “Twin Cities Fishing Guide”.

In 2001, my career turned a new page. A regular customer of my caricature work approached me with a special request:
“You’re the only artist we know. Can you draw a realistic portrait of our dog for us?
We just lost him and want to have a memory of him.”

I was touched by the honor of this experience. It was moving to be able to provide something so meaningful with my artwork. Reconnecting with my love of the portrait, I expanded my business to include realistic custom portraits of pets and people created in charcoal and pastel. Since then, I’ve drawn hundreds of pets and people. The connections I witness and experience myself are unlike anything I’d experienced in my commercial graphics career. Through my artwork, my customers have allowed me to honor the special bond they have with their loved ones. And being able to do this has been an honor for me.
